This course's objective is to critically expand the understanding of contemporary video art. It will explore video as a multidisciplinary medium, and lens-based media at large, especially outside of the flat screen. The course will enable the students to build a new relationship with space, both physical and non-physical. And it will demonstrate connections between architecture and sculpture. Students will generate projects that are immersive, experiential, sculptural, and innovative, keeping in mind the relevance of the medium in the future. They will be encouraged to question and re-examine its role. The applications can range from fashion films to abstract art to animations and installations and beyond.

The course is a step forward in understanding video as a medium and lens-based practice at large. It deals with making visuals and meaning. At the same time deals with critically questioning and re-evaluating the role and relevance of the medium in the future amongst AR/VR, and social and virtual platforms.

The course explores the relationship between video and art. It aims to look at the paradigms where video is and can be used as a medium. This ranges from fashion films to abstract art to installations.

This course is NOT about making documentaries or storytelling per se but to understand, re-think and re-imagining the medium.

Lectures, group discussions, and critiques will take place every week which will offer a platform for both technical and conceptual development. 

Introduction to Photography

This introductory-level course aims to familiarize students with the medium of photography and the rigor required to master it. Over the span of this course, students will be guided through the fundamental principles of photography, covering everything from composition and lighting to camera techniques and image editing. Through a combination of engaging lectures, hands-on practical sessions, and challenging assignments, they will gain a comprehensive understanding behind capturing stunning visuals.

The course aims to build the foundation of lens-based media. It will provide students an opportunity to use the camera as a tool of investigation to understand the politics of images. They will be to challenge themselves in experimenting with this highly versatile medium through the engagement of personal expression.

The course aims to provide technical as well as conceptual understating of making still and moving images. It also aims to familiarize students with the cultural and global relevance of the medium and acquaint them with its versatility.

The course also aims to pass the student through the rigor of the medium. It sets the stage for future studies in lens-based media.

Introduction to Video(art)

This is an introductory-level course that is a  journey into the captivating realm of video production. It is designed to familiarize students with the medium and its intricacies. The course delves into the fundamental principles that underpin exceptional video creation. From composition and lighting techniques to camera operation and post-production editing, every aspect is covered comprehensively.

 Dynamic lectures delve into the theory and aesthetics of video production, followed by hands-on practical sessions where students will have the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge. Through challenging assignments, they will hone their skills and develop a keen eye for capturing stunning visuals.

By the end of this course, students will emerge equipped with not only refined technical skills but also a cultivated artistic vision. They will possess the ability to create visually compelling videos, harnessing their creativity and expertise to convey powerful narratives. Whether they aspire to become a filmmaker, content creator, or video production professional, or a video artist this course will lay the foundation for their future success in the dynamic world of lens-based media.

Today, everyone is a photographer and a filmmaker carrying a camera in their pockets. It makes it imperative for future creative practitioners to be well-informed image-makers. Students will be learning the basic techniques along with a broad understanding of concepts related to image, sound,  video, and interactivity.  

The course aims to build the foundation of lens-based media. It will provide students an opportunity to use the camera as a tool of investigation to understand the politics of images. They will be to challenge themselves in experimenting with this extremely versatile medium through the engagement of personal expression.

4 Dimensionality: Time and Virtuality

Our lives today are divided in two: the real and the simulated. This course considers how to artistically tackle this gap between the physical and the virtual: space and time. It offers an in-depth look at the virtual realm, including the internet, forms of digital image-making, and time-based mediums. Simultaneously, students are introduced to conceptual themes relevant to new media today. They also explore sound, video production, and creative coding as an approach to storytelling and self-expression, cementing the link between the physical and digital worlds.

This course gives a new life and meaning to video by extending the boundaries of production to the digital space. It provides students with an opportunity to use moving images as an archival resource as well as a tool of investigation to understand the politics of social media and new expression. Students will explore the ways in which the web space can give new meaning to video production and circulation. Moreover, they are motivated to challenge themselves in experimenting with this extremely versatile medium through the engagement of personal expression. 

The course aims for students to gain a comprehensive overview of the experimentation, execution, and theory of contemporary video art through non-linear editing platforms.
